Ikea Furnite Hacks

ree

This week, I am building some furniture pieces that will be featured in my dining room remodel. One of the reasons I chose to do this was because I needed a solution to store my shoes. I rew tired of seeing my shoes laying on the floor, so I though this would be a great solution.

Originally, I had planned on getting the "Hemnes" shoe storage cabinet from "Ikea", however, all shoe storage cabinets have been sold out for weeks at my local "Ikea" store, and not available for online ordering.

A couple of days ago, I took a trip to Ikea, literally 10 minutes from my house, and found the "Stall" shoe storage unit. Although, not the one I originally planned on getting, nor the right color, I ended up buying it and bringing it home with me.

After I picked up this storage unit and brought it home, I assembled it and started brainstorming ideas on how to cover the front, and what color to paint it. One of my friends, Megan, from @mid_centurymillenial sent me a video that showed someone hacking this exact same unit to create a fluted look. In the video, they used lattice to create a frame, which is where the idea came from. Since, I didn't want a fluted look, I did not care to use any wooden dowels. With this newfound knowledge, I headed to "Home Depot" to pick up some lattice trim. I Ended up cutting 16 pieces at18 inches each that totaled over 20 feet in length, (this is where having a saw would've been super useful, lol).

Cutting this lattice took me over three hours. I got home and still had to cut all ends at a 45 degree angle. This was so exhausting, but totally worth it in the end. :)

To attach the lattice to the doors, I used wood glue and clamps to make sure the pieces didn't move. I let them dry overnight, and In the morning, I gave the entire unit a light sanding using 120-grit sandpaper.

Lastly, using Kilz all purpose primer, I primed the surface of the unit, and put it back together. Don't forget to follow along as I continue this extreme room transformation.

The next couple of weeks will be dedicated to building furniture and finishing the ones I've already put together.
